 The major reasons for sulfur intolerance have to do with cystathione beta synthase (CBS) and sulfite oxidase (SUOX) enzyme mutations (1,2, 3). These mutations typically do not cause excessive sulfur levels in the body alone. People who are struggling with sulfur intolerance typically have a combination of genetic polymorphisms, heavy metal toxicity, leaky gut syndrome and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).
Signs of sulfur intolerance:
Indications for sulfur intolerance include a difficulty controlling yeast even with large amounts of anti-fungals and probiotics. Most common symptoms include breath that smells like ammonia, brain fog, fatigue and general malaise. Other symptoms include difficulty breathing, hay fever like symptoms, hives, skin reactions and even seizures.

Another red flag for sulfur intolerance happens when an individual begins on glutathione boosting supplements such as MSM, TMG, NAC and milk thistle and they start complaining about negative side effects. Other indications include an allergy to Sulfa drugs and high levels of sulfur on a hair test or high sulfites on a urine test (4).


Sulfur exclusion trial:
The negative effects of sulfur can last over a 4-7 day period after the last ingestion of dietary sulfur. This means that all sulfur rich foods and supplements must be avoided for a full week before accurately know if this is an issue for you.

After a full week off of the sulfur rich foods and supplements, you then add them back in abundance. If you feel worse soon after introducing sulfur foods, it is a sign of poor sulfur metabolism. This would indicate the need to go on a low-sulfur diet while you work on repairing your gut, address any micronutrient deficiencies and remove toxins.


Dietary restrictions to sulfur intolerance:
Sulfur containing foods are extremely healthy for most individuals but not for those with major CBS mutation problems. These individuals must limit sulfur intake by removing garlic, onions, cruciferous veggies, eggs, legumes, all protein-rich dairy. They also must avoid normally great supplements like alpha lipoic acid, glutathione, MSM, DMSO and N-Acetyl Cysteine.

Detoxification strategies such as heavy metal chelators and Epsom salt baths should be avoided as well. Other supplements to avoid will be L-methionine, L-cysteine, L-taurine, glucosamine, L-glycine, DMSO, SAMe, methylcobalamine, methyl-folate, Betaine, HCL and choline.
Nutrition plan to reduce ammonia:
It is extremely important to have good drinking water filtration and shower filtration to avoid ammonia that may be in typical city municipalities. A reverse osmosis filter will take the ammonia out of the water and you can add back trace minerals with a pinch of pink salt.

The nutrition plan should focus on full-fat coconut products, grass-fed butter/ghee and small amounts of grass-fed and pasture-raised meat. Avocados are good and low-sulfur veggies such as romaine lettuce, celery, cucumbers, carrots and parsley will be very good. Chia, sunflower, flax and pumpkin seeds along with macadamia nuts can be used in moderation. Fatty portions of animal such as stock bones are typically well tolerated.

Small amounts of meat and fish can also be used but protein levels should be kept under 50 grams per day. Extra-virgin olive oil can be used generously as can herbs like ginger, oregano, basil, thyme, sage, rosemary and cinnamon.
